Little Tybee Island is a great location for an adventure. Located just outside of Savannah Georgia, the Tybee islands are part of a series of barrier islands that looms over the mouth of the Savannah River. This is one of the most historical trade routes in the area. For hundreds of years, canoes, sailed ships, and now modern vessels pass through the Tybee Islands on their way to and from Savannah.

Big Tybee Island, is a developed and popular vacation town. Each year thousands of tourists visit the beaches of Tybee Island for a taste of the Georgia Coast Life. Little Tybee Island is just south of “big tybee”, and is still completely uninhabited wilderness. This coastal wilderness has become a popular playground for campers, kayakers and outdoor sportsmen.

How to get to Little Tybee – Park at Alley 3 Boat Ramp, paddle south across Tybee Creek toward the treeline. Standing trees is a good market for dry land. Mind the tides, and don’t set up your gear anywhere close to high tide line. The best time to paddle is when the tide is low enough that the barrier sandbars are exposed and block the ocean waves/currents. When the tide gets high, they breach the barrier sand bars and allow ocean currents into the Tybee Creek mouth.

Camping on Little Tybee – You will need to pack in everything that you need to survive on island for as long as you plan to stay. My suggestions, skip the tent and sleep in a hammock. There are many areas suitable for hammock camping. A hammock such as a ENO, is small and easily packed on your kayak. Firewood is also readily available. Bring a hatchet or saw to make quick work of down timber.

Hazards on Little Tybee – The bugs can be bad at times, bring at least 2 defense strategies against insects. For example, a bug net and bug spray. The sun can be unforgiving, bring sunblock and something to make shade when needed. Also bring plenty of fresh water. The tides must also be heeded; paddle during optimal low tide times, rest/relax on the beach during high tide. Don’t contest nature, live with it. Wear protective footwear in the water and on the island.
